Those assemblies fail in particular ways.

Hail rarely punches through an asphalt shingle. It fractures the mat underneath and displaces granules, leaving a bruise that keeps shedding water for another season before it leaks, and the reading is harder still on an older roof carrying a second layer of shingles over the first. The Environmental Protection Agency puts a clock on that: materials dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak will in most cases not grow mold.
